Second co-design sprint workshop 11-12 March 2021 - Defining charity:

What should be the definition of charitable purpose in contemporary Aotearoa New Zealand?

Our second workshop was facilitated by Mele Wendt MNZM from the Centre for Social Impact. We would like to extend our sincere thanks to the Charity Law Association of Australia and New Zealand, without whose support it would not have been possible for us to hold this co-design workshop.

The second workshop explored the following challenge question: given that the current legal framework and the way it is being applied may be presenting barriers to charitable work and its potential, what should be the definition of charitable purpose in contemporary Aotearoa New Zealand, and how should it be determined?”

First co-design sprint workshop 26 November 2020 -
Agency structure:

One of the areas where we have been receiving the most feedback relates to agency structure

In the draft bill, we suggested a 2-agency structure, with a charities registrar responsible for administering the charities register, and an advisory board tasked with advocating for the interests of the charitable sector and the wider for-purpose sector: we do not appear to be well served by having one agency trying to serve these 2 often conflicting functions. Feedback on the draft bill led to the following topic for the first workshop: “what is the best structure for the agency(s) that administer charities’ legislation in Aotearoa New Zealand?”
